One of the most intriguing and controversial “I am” (ἐγώ εἰμι) statements in John is found here in 8:58. The Deutero-Isaiah passage that seems to be alluded to is Isa 43:13. The NRSV translates the first part of the verse as, “I am God, and also henceforth I am He,” taking the phrase from the traditional v. 12 and affixing it to the beginning of v. 13. The NASB translates it in the traditional verse structure as, “Even from eternity I am He.” The variation can be accounted for when we compare the LXX with the MT:
